[ His eyes are steady on her face when she says that. Some of the tension eases from his shoulders, a noticeable difference. ]

Well, that's a relief. I must have made some kind of impression.

[ It's hard to miss the way the tension in his shoulders ease. He tries to joke it off, but she can't help but smile. ]

Did you think I'd expect you to abandon us?

[ He returns her hug, and casually allows his arms to stay around her. ]

I wondered. It wouldn't be the first time you've been suspicious of my motives.

And then you proved me wrong. You showed me how great a man you really are. [ And she wasn't just being nice.

Nikolai was one of the best men she'd ever known.

Although his caring wasn't entirely above suspect, still. But she'd never really believe someone like him could really love someone like her. ]

[ Nikolai can't help laughing at that. He lifts an eyebrow. ]

So you say. I'm glad you do. You're one of the few people who actually sounds like she means it.
